Location
Singapore is an island republic situated between the
countries Malaysia and Indonesia. Singapore is approximately
137 km north of the equator, or about one degree north
of the equator with a land area of 685.4 sq km, or approximately
3.5 times the size of Washington DC.
Population
Singapore's multi-cultural society of over 4 million
is reflected in its major ethnic groups: the Chinese
(76%), Malays (13.7%), Indians (8.4%), and Eurasians
and smaller minority groups (1.8%). Each of these communities
celebrates its unique practices, religions and festivals.
Languages
English is the language of administration, business,
and technology. The official languages are Malay, Chinese
(Mandarin), Tamil and English.
Climate
The tropical climate makes Singapore warm and wet most
of the year. Normal temperature ranges between
25.2°C - 32° C.
Currency
The local currency is Singapore dollars and cents. Other
than the Singapore dollar, the US and Australian dollar,
Yen and British pound are also widely accepted, at major
shopping centres and restaurants.
Getting Around
Getting around the city and the suburbs is a breeze
with Singapore's extensive and reliable public transport
system.
Food
Singaporean's are passionate about food and eating.
In this cosmopolitan and multicultural city, you can
expect nothing less than a melange of flavours from
around the globe.
Singapore's immediate neighbours are Malaysia (Peninsular
Malaysia to the North, Sarawak and Sabah to the East),
Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia.
Being very close to the Equator, Singapore's climate
is characterised by abundant rainfall, relatively uniform
temperature and high humidity throughout the year. December
is the coolest month of the year while May is the warmest.
The mean daily temperature is 26.8°C.
The official languages in Singapore are Malay, Chinese
(Mandarin), Tamil and English. Malay is the national
language and English is the language of administration.
The Constitution allows every person the right to profess
and practice his religion and to propagate it. The main
religions in Singapore are Buddhism, Taoism, Islam,
Christianity and Hinduism.
The flag of Singapore consists of two equal horizontal
sections, red above white. In the upper left canton
is a white crescent moon beside five white stars within
a circle. Red symbolises universal brotherhood and equality
of man, while white signifies pervading and everlasting
purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young
nation on the ascendant, illuminated by the ideals of
democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality as
signified by the five stars. |
