| History of the University |
The University of Portsmouth
was inaugurated in 1992. The former Portsmouth Polytechnic, one
of the largest and most successful in the UK, itself grew from the
Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Arts, founded in 1869 |
 |
Because of its long history as a busy port, Portsmouth is used
to welcoming people from all over the world. With road and rail
links to London, and ferries to France and Spain, Portsmouth really
is the gateway to Europe.
The city is compact – it's built on an island after all
– so you can get around easily on foot or by bike. Students
from the UK, Europe and further afield find that they settle in
quickly and soon feel part of the place. And because it’s
easy to get around, and the cost of living is relatively low,
you can spend your time and money on the things that matter –
studying, making friends and enjoying all that the area has to
offer.
Portsmouth was home to some great Britons
too. Charles Dickens was born here, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote
Sherlock Holmes here and the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel lived
and worked here |

Shopping
|

 |
Portsmouth boasts three main shopping areas, including our new
£200 million waterside complex at Gunwharf Quays, which
offers over 60 designer outlet stores - great for students on
a budget, as many goods are offered at up to 70% off normal high
street prices
Clubs, live music and comedy
Portsmouth has a great mix of clubs and music venues to suit the
tastes of most people. The main strip of nightclubs is down on
the beach, with central Southsea offering a wide range of bars
if you are looking for a more relaxed evening.
Portsmouth has several large venues for live music hosting many
of the most popular artists. There are also various smaller venues
where new and local bands play - look out for the regular Battle
of the Bands.
Comedy is also big in the city with three main venues hosting
regular comedy nights featuring both well known and up and coming
comedians.
Portsmouth has a wide range of restaurants all over the city.
As well as the usual Chinese and Indian restaurants, you can sample
the menus from Italy, France, Greece Vietnam and Thailand amongst
others. Lots of bars do a great snack menu and we also have some
fabulous seafood restaurants.
There are two theatres in the city centre with regular performances
of traditional, modern and avante-garde productions. There are
also two festival theatres within easy reach, at Chichester and
Tichfield, with contemporary productions and some open-air performances.
Various art galleries around the city exhibit work by local,
national and international artists.
One of the attractions of Portsmouth is the diverse mix of old
and new, creating a modern city steeped in history. The new Gunwharf
Quays development sits comfortably next to the Historic Dockyard,
blending spectacular shopping with our naval heritage.
The new Spinnaker Tower, the tallest man-made structure in the
south, overlooks the castle at Southsea where King Henry VIII
watched the Mary Rose sink into the Solent. And some fabulous
developments are planned for the site where the notorious Tricorn
Centre - voted the ugliest building in Europe - once stood
